What US businesses pay for insurance, and why

About Commercial Insurance Cost

Commercial Insurance Cost explains what US businesses pay for commercial insurance, which policies the law or a contract requires, and how insurers arrive at a price.

Most published “average costs” of business insurance come from one insurer or broker describing its own customers, often without a date or a definition of the figure. Those numbers are useful, but they disagree with one another, and the official data that regulators, rating bureaus and statistical agencies publish rarely reaches business owners. We bring the two together: official figures where they exist, insurer figures where they are all there is, each labelled for what it is.

The site covers 60 articles on coverages, industries, pricing and data, and a page for each of the 51 jurisdictions (50 states and the District of Columbia).

Independence

Commercial Insurance Cost is an independent publication. We are not an insurer, broker or agent, we do not sell or quote policies, and no insurer pays to be included or to be described in a particular way. Insurer and broker names appear only as the sources of the figures they publish. The site is funded by advertising, which is shown separately from the content and has no influence on it.

How we research

  • Primary sources first. Workers’ compensation figures come from state rate decisions, rating bureaus, state funds, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Academy of Social Insurance; health premiums from the federal MEPS-IC survey; requirements from statutes and agency pages.
  • Every figure labelled. Each number states whether it is an official statistic, a regulator-approved rate, an insurer-reported median or average, or our own calculation, with its source and period.
  • Independent checks. Each page is checked claim by claim against its sources by a reviewer who did not write it, before it is published and after each update.
  • Dated reviews. Every page shows when it was last checked; every page is re-checked at least every 90 days and whenever a source publishes new figures.

The methodology explains each type of figure, the data sources and their limits.

What this site is not

Nothing here is a quote, insurance advice or legal advice. A premium depends on facts about your business that no published average can capture. Use the figures to budget and to judge whether a quote is in a normal range, then ask a licensed agent or broker in your state.

Corrections

If a figure is out of date or wrong, use the “Report an error” link at the end of any page or contact us. We check every report against the source and update the page and its review date when a correction is needed.
